Haaland Double Stuns Brazil as Norway Reach Historic World Cup Quarter-Finals
Norway stunned five-time world champions Brazil with a dramatic 2-1 victory as Erling Haaland scored twice to send his country into the World Cup quarter-finals.

Norway produced one of the biggest results of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating five-time champions Brazil 2-1 in a dramatic Round of 16 clash at New York New Jersey Stadium.
Erling Haaland was once again the difference-maker for Norway, scoring twice late in the second half to eliminate Brazil and send his country into the World Cup quarter-finals.
Brazil pulled one back through Neymar from the penalty spot deep into added time, but the goal came too late to stop Norway from celebrating a historic victory.
Brazil Miss Golden Opportunity
The match began with Norway showing little fear of Brazil’s reputation.
Norway had an early goal ruled out for offside after a quick attacking move exposed the Brazilian defence. The warning was clear: the European side had not come simply to defend and wait for penalties.
Brazil were later handed a huge opportunity to take control of the game when they were awarded a penalty in the first half.
Bruno Guimarães stepped forward, but Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland read the attempt and made the save to keep the score level.
The missed penalty proved costly. Brazil had opportunities, but Norway remained disciplined and continued to believe they could hurt the South American giants.
Haaland Changes the Game
As the match entered its final stages, the possibility of extra time appeared increasingly likely.
Then Erling Haaland took control.
In the 79th minute, Andreas Schjelderup supplied the ball for Haaland, who found the breakthrough and gave Norway a precious 1-0 lead.
Brazil pushed forward looking for an equaliser, but that created further opportunities for Norway.
Ten minutes later, Schjelderup was involved again, finding Haaland before the striker produced another clinical finish to double Norway’s advantage.
The second goal left Brazil facing an almost impossible task with very little time remaining. Haaland’s brace also took him to seven goals in the tournament at that point.
Neymar's Late Goal Comes Too Late
Brazil refused to surrender and were given a late lifeline when they received another penalty deep into added time.
Neymar stepped forward and converted to reduce Norway’s advantage to 2-1.
However, the five-time world champions could not find another goal before the final whistle.
Norway had done it.
The European side had eliminated one of international football's biggest names and secured a place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
Historic Night for Norway
The victory represents a major moment in Norwegian football history.
Before this tournament, Norway's previous best World Cup performance was reaching the Round of 16. By defeating Brazil, the current generation has gone further than any previous Norwegian team at the competition.
The result also showed that Norway's success is about more than one player. Haaland delivered the goals, but the team’s organisation, confidence and discipline played a major role in frustrating Brazil.
Nyland's penalty save was crucial, while Norway's midfield and defence worked tirelessly to prevent Brazil from controlling the match.
When the decisive opportunities arrived, Haaland showed why he is regarded as one of the world's most dangerous strikers.
Brazil's World Cup Dream Ends
For Brazil, the defeat brings another painful World Cup campaign to an end.
The South American giants arrived at the tournament hoping to add a sixth World Cup trophy to their record, but Norway proved more effective in the moments that mattered most.
Brazil had opportunities to take control of the game, particularly with the first-half penalty, but failed to capitalise.
Once Haaland opened the scoring, Brazil were forced to chase the game, and Norway punished them again.
Neymar's late penalty provided brief hope, but it could not change the outcome.
Brazil are going home. Norway are moving forward.
And after eliminating the five-time world champions, the rest of the tournament will be paying very close attention to Haaland and his teammates.
