New Book Reopens Mystery of Sani Abacha's Death Nearly Three Decades Later

A new book by retired Department of State Services (DSS) officer Dennis Amachree has reignited public interest in one of Nigeria's most enduring political mysteries—the death of former military Head of State General Sani Abacha.

In his memoir, DSS @40: My Journey Behind the Shield, Amachree recounts events surrounding Abacha's sudden death on June 8, 1998, challenging several conspiracy theories that have circulated for nearly three decades.

A Different Account of Abacha's Final Hours

According to Amachree, the account presented in the book is based on information allegedly obtained from a pharmacist who was present during Abacha's final moments at the Presidential Villa.

The author writes that the woman, who accompanied her sister to visit the military ruler, was left alone with Abacha after her sister departed. During an intimate encounter, she allegedly noticed that Abacha became unresponsive and later realized he had died. Amachree says the woman subsequently left the villa before news of the former leader's death became public.

The memoir argues that this version of events best explains what happened and disputes several other accounts that have emerged over the years.

Book Rejects Popular Conspiracy Theories

For years, Abacha's death has been the subject of numerous theories.

Some accounts claimed he was poisoned by political opponents or foreign intelligence agencies, while others alleged he died after taking medication to enhance sexual performance. Another version suggested that underlying health complications were solely responsible for his sudden collapse.

Amachree rejects these competing narratives, arguing that they are not supported by the evidence available to him during his years in the security service.
