Federal High Court Ruling on ‘Barrister’ Title Sparks Debate Across Nigeria’s Legal Profession
A court decision challenging the use of the title “Barrister” has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s legal profession, raising fresh questions about legal tradition, professional identity, and how lawyers should officially present themselves.

A Judgment That Has Everyone Talking
Nigeria’s legal community has been thrown into intense debate following a court ruling that questions the long-standing practice of lawyers using “Barrister” as a title before their names.
For generations, it has been common to see names such as Barr. John Doe on signboards, business cards, political campaign posters, and official correspondence. But the ruling has reignited discussion over whether that practice is actually recognised under Nigerian legal tradition.
If widely enforced, the decision could reshape how thousands of legal practitioners identify themselves in public.
What Does the Ruling Mean?
The central issue is not whether Nigerian lawyers are barristers—they are.
Every person called to the Nigerian Bar is admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. The controversy is over using “Barrister” (or “Barr.”) as a prefix before a person’s name, rather than describing their professional qualification after their name.
Legal commentators have argued that the preferred professional style is to write a lawyer’s name normally and indicate the qualification where appropriate, rather than adopting “Barrister” as an honorific title.
