Spain Leave It Late to Defeat Portugal in World Cup Classic

Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after Mikel Merino scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Portugal in one of the tournament's most anticipated Round of 16 encounters.

For nearly 90 minutes, the Iberian rivals cancelled each other out in a tactical battle that featured disciplined defending, relentless midfield pressure and few clear-cut opportunities. Just when extra time appeared inevitable, Spain found the breakthrough that shattered Portugal's hopes.

The decisive moment arrived in the first minute of stoppage time. After Spain took a quick free-kick while Portugal's defence briefly switched off, Ferran Torres slipped a perfectly weighted pass into the path of substitute Mikel Merino, who calmly fired past Diogo Costa to spark wild celebrations among the Spanish players and supporters.

Midfield Battle Defined the Contest

Spain enjoyed greater control of possession for much of the match, with Rodri dictating the tempo and helping his side dominate the midfield battle. Portugal remained organised defensively and frustrated the European champions for long spells, but struggled to create sustained attacking pressure.

Young sensation Lamine Yamal was tightly marked early in the game, particularly by Nuno Mendes, although Spain gradually found more space as the contest wore on. Portugal's defensive discipline kept the score level until the closing moments, but one lapse in concentration proved costly.

Ronaldo's World Cup Journey Ends

The defeat also marked the end of Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup career.

The 41-year-old captain led Portugal once again but found few opportunities to influence the match against Spain's disciplined defence. After the final whistle, the Portuguese legend was visibly emotional as his nation's hopes of lifting football's biggest prize came to an end.

Although he leaves without winning a FIFA World Cup, Ronaldo's international legacy remains one of the greatest in football history, having inspired Portugal to numerous memorable moments across more than two decades.

Spain March Into the Quarter-Finals

Spain's victory keeps alive their dream of lifting another World Cup trophy. Luis de la Fuente's side now advances to the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the United States versus Belgium Round of 16 match.

With their midfield continuing to dictate matches and their defence remaining difficult to break down, Spain once again demonstrated why many consider them among the favourites to win the tournament.

For Portugal, however, the tournament ends in painful fashion after a spirited defensive display was undone by a single moment of brilliance deep into stoppage time.
