Makinde Calls for Unity and Hard Work as Oyo Nears End of His Second Term
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged political appointees and public servants to intensify their efforts as his administration enters its final stretch. Speaking during the swearing-in of a new commissioner and a minor cabinet reshuffle, the governor said the focus must now be on leaving a lasting legacy rather than seeking personal recognition.

As the countdown to the end of his second term begins, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has delivered a clear message to members of his administration:
"Finish strong."
Rather than reflecting on past achievements, the governor says the remaining months of his administration should be dedicated to delivering results that will outlive his tenure.
Makinde made the remarks on Monday while swearing in Dr. Taiwo Ladipo as a commissioner following a minor cabinet reshuffle at the Executive Council Chambers in Ibadan. He also used the occasion to challenge commissioners, permanent secretaries and other political appointees to redouble their efforts in service to the people of Oyo State.
"Leave a Lasting Impact"
According to Makinde, every appointment in government comes with responsibility.
He reminded officials that public office is an opportunity to serve—not a reward to be enjoyed.
"It is imperative for the administration to finish strong and leave a lasting impact," the governor said, urging appointees to remain loyal, committed and focused on delivering the objectives of the Omituntun 2.0 agenda.
The statement comes as his administration enters the final phase of its constitutional term, with attention gradually shifting toward how history will judge the government's performance.
Cabinet Reshuffle Signals a Push for Results
The governor also addressed recent changes within his cabinet, insisting that personnel adjustments should not be interpreted as punishment.
Instead, he described them as part of efforts to strengthen governance and improve service delivery.
Dr. Taiwo Ladipo, who previously served as Permanent Secretary for General Administration and had earlier been Commissioner for Health, was sworn in as Commissioner for Establishments and Training.
At the same time, Professor Solihu Adelabu was redeployed to the Ministry of Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry.
Makinde said such changes are normal in government and are intended to ensure that the right people occupy positions where they can contribute most effectively.
Leadership Is Measured by Results
Political analysts often argue that the final months of an administration can shape public perception more than the early years.
Projects completed.
Promises fulfilled.
Policies implemented.
These are often what voters remember.
Makinde's remarks suggest that he is aware of this reality.
By urging his team to work harder rather than relax, the governor appears determined to ensure that his administration is remembered for delivering tangible results until its final day in office.
Oyo Still Faces Important Challenges
Although the state has recorded progress in infrastructure, education, healthcare and security during Makinde's tenure, significant challenges remain.
Economic pressures continue to affect households.
Youth unemployment remains a concern.
Communities continue to demand improved roads, better healthcare and greater economic opportunities.
Completing ongoing projects and maintaining public confidence will therefore be critical in the remaining months of the administration.
Fresh From the Schoolchildren Rescue
Makinde's appeal for stronger commitment comes only days after the successful rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area.
The governor is also expected to formally receive the rescued victims, while the state continues to provide medical treatment and psychological support following their release after weeks in captivity. The successful operation has been widely welcomed by residents and religious leaders, who praised the efforts of security agencies and the Oyo State Government.
The rescue has strengthened the administration's argument that sustained collaboration between security agencies and government can produce positive outcomes.
Public Expectations Remain High
As the administration moves closer to its conclusion, expectations among residents remain high.
Many citizens will judge the government not only by its completed projects but also by how effectively it manages the final phase of its tenure.
Makinde's message to his cabinet reflects that urgency.
The governor wants every commissioner and public official to treat the remaining months not as the end of an administration, but as an opportunity to complete unfinished work.
The Race to Leave a Legacy
Every governor hopes to leave behind more than buildings and official records.
They hope to leave institutions that work.
Policies that endure.
Communities that prosper.
Whether Seyi Makinde ultimately achieves that ambition will be decided not by speeches alone, but by what his administration accomplishes before handing over power.
For now, his instruction to his team is simple:
There is still work to do.
And the finish line is approaching.
