US President Donald Trump has found himself at the centre of one of the biggest controversies of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after personally asking FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the red card shown to United States striker Folarin Balogun.

The intervention came after Balogun was sent off during the United States’ 2-0 Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Balogun received a straight red card following a VAR review of an incident involving Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic. The decision carried an automatic one-match suspension that would have ruled the American striker out of the United States’ Round of 16 match against Belgium.

However, FIFA later suspended the effect of the ban, allowing Balogun to play against Belgium.

The decision immediately triggered controversy after it emerged that Trump had personally contacted Infantino and asked for the case to be reviewed.

Trump Confirms Intervention

Trump later confirmed that he had asked FIFA to examine the decision, arguing that Balogun had been treated unfairly.

Speaking about the incident, the US president said he had watched the challenge and believed the striker had done nothing wrong.

Trump praised FIFA’s decision to allow Balogun to play, describing the outcome as a good decision for the tournament.

However, he also criticised Brazilian referee Raphael Claus, who issued the red card after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor.

The president’s comments added another layer to the controversy, with FIFA subsequently publicly defending the referee and expressing confidence in his professionalism.

FIFA Says Decision Was Independent

FIFA has rejected suggestions that its disciplinary process was improperly influenced by political pressure.

The organisation said its disciplinary committee had the authority under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code to suspend the effect of the one-match ban.

Under the decision, the red card itself was not simply erased from Balogun’s disciplinary record. Instead, the automatic suspension was placed under a one-year probationary period.

If the striker commits another offence of a similar nature and seriousness during that period, the suspended punishment could be enforced.

FIFA officials have maintained that the disciplinary committee operates independently and that the decision was based on the organisation’s regulations rather than political pressure.

However, the timing of the decision following Trump’s intervention has continued to generate questions about the appearance of political influence in football.

UEFA Says FIFA Crossed a Red Line

The controversy quickly spread beyond the United States and Belgium.

UEFA strongly criticised FIFA’s handling of the case, arguing that the decision raised serious concerns about consistency and the integrity of football competitions.

European football officials described the intervention as unprecedented and questioned why an automatic suspension following a red card could be treated differently in this case.

The Belgian football authorities also expressed frustration with the decision, particularly because Balogun was cleared to face Belgium in the Round of 16.

Critics argued that even if FIFA had the legal authority to suspend the punishment, the circumstances surrounding the decision created damaging questions about whether powerful political figures could influence disciplinary matters.

FIFA, however, has defended its position and maintained that its disciplinary regulations allow flexibility in certain circumstances.

United States Still Eliminated by Belgium

Despite the controversy and Balogun’s availability, the United States were unable to continue their World Cup campaign.

Belgium defeated the host nation 4-1 in the Round of 16, ending American hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.

The result added an unexpected conclusion to the controversy.

Balogun was allowed to play following FIFA’s decision, but his presence was not enough to prevent a heavy defeat for the United States.

The controversy, however, has continued even after the host nation’s elimination.

Questions Over Political Influence in Football

The Balogun case has opened a wider debate about the relationship between political power and football administration.

Presidents and governments regularly play significant roles in organising major sporting tournaments, particularly when countries host events such as the World Cup or Olympic Games.

However, football’s governing bodies have traditionally insisted that sporting and disciplinary decisions should remain independent of government interference.

That principle is now at the centre of the Balogun controversy.

Supporters of the decision argue that the original red card was harsh and that correcting an unfair disciplinary outcome should be welcomed regardless of who requested the review.

Critics, however, argue that the bigger issue is not whether the original decision was correct but whether similar access to FIFA’s leadership would be available to every national team.

The controversy therefore raises an important question: if a president can personally call football’s most powerful administrator after a disciplinary decision involving his country’s star player, how can the governing body demonstrate that its final decision was completely independent?

A Defining Controversy of World Cup 2026

The 2026 World Cup has already produced dramatic matches, surprising results and memorable performances, but the Balogun case has created one of the tournament’s most significant off-field controversies.

Trump has defended his involvement as an attempt to correct what he considered an unfair decision.

FIFA insists that its disciplinary committee acted independently and within its own regulations.

Critics across European football remain unconvinced.

The United States may have been eliminated from the tournament, but the debate surrounding Trump’s intervention and FIFA’s decision is unlikely to disappear quickly.

For FIFA, the challenge will be demonstrating that its disciplinary rules apply equally to every team, regardless of the political power or influence of the country involved.
